Subject: New Vehicles for Virus and Malware Attacks
At this point in time everyone should be comfortable with the basics of safe computing: 1) don’t download and install “free” software from unknown vendors or web sites, 2) keep your virus definitions current, 3) keep Microsoft Operating System critical updates current, 4) never open an attachment or click a link in an email from an unknown sender, and so forth.
Security specialists are now proclaiming that the rise of online video also increases the chances of videos acting as vectors for embedded viruses and malware. These concerns were addressed in a report from Georgia Tech Information Security Center. With computer users getting wiser to e-mail scams, malicious hackers are looking for sneakier ways to spread the codes. Over the past few years, hackers have moved from sending their spam in text-based messages to more devious means, embedding them in images or disguised as PDF files. “The next logical step seems to be the media players,” said Chris Rouland, the chief technology officer for IBM Corp.’s Internet Security Systems unit.
In a related note, Skype users are currently under attack from a new worm that spreads via Skype’s chat feature. The attack comes in the form of an instant message from either an existing contact or an unknown Skype user. To date several versions of the chat messages have been identified.
