Traditional Balkan folklore music themes interpreted with a contemporary slant.
Aleksandar Sanja Ilic is one of the most famous composers of pop and rock music of former and new Yugoslavia. He started with the band "San" in Belgrade. He composed songs for almost all major singers. Many of his compositions won the title "Hit of the Year". He has won many awards of the audience and jury at festivals in Yugoslavia.
Balkan 2000 is a piece composed as a modern expression inspired by the sacral and profane music of the Balkans, or more precisely with Byzantine Commonwealth, with an accent on Serbia and regions inhabited by Serbs, through the folklore, harmonies and musical instruments of our region including the flute, kaval, clarinet, ud, shaz, gusle, goch, bagpipes and djumbus combined with the piano and the author Sanja Ilic as soloist.
Sanja's group, named 「Balkanika」, consists of young, famous and talented ethno-music musicians which are playing old Balkans instruments with modern feeling, rhythm and sensibility.
