Romania - Wild Sounds from Transylvania, Wallachia & Moldavia

Wild sounds from Transylvania, Wallachia and Moldavia are the words on the back of this CD.
They got that right: ear-grabbing vivid music by Romanian and Gypsy artists in studios from
Bucharest--a wild splash of pulsating syncopated rhythms and instrumental colors ranging from
the vicara cu goama (a horn-enhanced fiddle) to bold brass bands bouncing along in rhythm
patterns of three-three-two. (Remember the background rhythm to Mission Impossible?)
Female vocals are interspersed with soaring paper-whistle melodies, and village dances with
running clarinet lines recall passages by George Enescu, Bela Bartok and Leos Janacek.
Instrumental breaks, not out of place in jazz, run headlong into spiraling fiddles and hammered
dulcimer. It s a rhythmic, dancing delight to the ears, with lyrical moments and exotic tunes.

Treasures of Romanian Folklore (2008) - 5 CD's

Folk music is, on one hand, the oldest form of Romanian musical creation, characterized by perennially great vitality, and on the other, a source of inspiration for sophisticated musical compositions, both religious and lay. In the conservation and development of folk music an important role has been played, besides the permanence of the audience, by great performers.

This series introduces instrumental music from 5 Romanian folklore regions: Moldova, Muntenia, Oltenia & Dobrogea, Banat, and Transilvania.

Performers:

Grigoraş Dinicu - vioară
Marcel Budală - acordeon
Efta Botoca - vioară
Toni Iordache - ţambal
Alexandru Ţitruş - vioară
Silvestru Lungoci - tilincă
Orch. Paraschiv Oprea
Orch. Ionel Budiştcanu

CD1 - Moldova

Moldova is a region in the East of Romania, neighboring Ukraine. The music of this area is enriched by Slavic, Jewish and even Turkish influences.
A group (taraf) composed of the fiddle (scripca), the dulcimer (lumbal), and unfretted lute (cobza) is the modern format most common in Moldavian dance music. George lincscu, born in this land, seized upon the richness of this folklore and was inspired by it when he wrote his two Rhapsodies, true masterpieces comprising the whole emotional content of the local music. Two of their main themes are taken from the folk melodies "Hora lui Dobrica"and "Sarba lui Pompieru".
Dobrogca's population is especially diverse, and there exist elements of traditional Tartar, Ukrainian. Turkish and Bulgarian music among those populations. The most popular dance from Dobrogea is the geampara, which is very different from the other traditional dances of Romania.

Tracklist:

01. Orch. Paraschiv Oprea - Sarba moldovenilor

03. Orch. Paraschiv Oprea - Joc din Bacau

Total time: 00:29:20

CD2 - Muntenia

Muntenia is home to the taraf bands (a small instrumental group), which are perhaps the best-known expression of Romanian folk culture. Dances associated with tarafs include brau, geampara, sarba and hora. The fiddle leads the music, with the dulcimer and the double bass accompanying it. The members of the taraf are known by the generic name of lautari (fiddlers). They perform in villages or at the periphery of the cities, during popular events. To introduce to a wider audience the beauty of Romanian folklore, larger orchestras were formed - commonly called "ensembles of folk music" - comprised of many instrumentalists with advanced musical studies, under the direction of conductors specialized in this musical genre. Oftentimes a folk song is adapted to be performed in a larger setting. Thusly, in all the regions of Romania-Ensembles of Folk Music were formed, which concertize and perform on television and radio. In addition, many albums were recorded with instrumental or vocal folk music.
Long the capital region of Romania, Muntenia has a more diverse set of instrumentation, but presently clarinets and accordions are more often used. Accordionists include the renowned performer Marcel Budală.

Tracklist:

01. Orch. Paraschiv Oprea - Ciocarlia
02. Toni Iordache - Cantec de ascultare si Breaza

Total time: 00:30:58

CD3 - Oltenia & Dobrogea (bonus)

Oltenia's folk music and dance is similar to Muntenia. Violins and pipes are used, as are ţambal and guitar, replacing the cobza as the rhythmic backing for tarafs. The cimpoi (bagpipe) is also popular in this region. This is where the world-famous 'Căluşul' dance is performed - which is actually a ritual dance with ancient, savage roots.

Tracklist:

01. Orch. Paraschiv Oprea - Calusul oltenesc

12. Efta Botoca - Doina lui Efta Botoca

Total time: 00:36:14

CD5 - Transilvania

Transylvania has been historically and culturally more linked to Central European countries than Southeastern Europe, and its music reflects those influences. Transylvania is comprised of several areas, like Ardeal, Crişana, Maramureş, Oaş. Bela Bartok and Kodaly collected many folk songs from Transylvania early in the 20th century. In our days, Deep Forest included folk songs from Transylvania on their albums. A well-known representative of Transylvanian folk music is the fiddler Alexandru Alexandru Ţitruş.
The melodies in this miscellany collection are culled from the Romanian folklore's treasure trove. Many of them were recorded long ago, but their priceless quality convinced us to re-master them carefully for safe-keeping, research and documentation of the richness of this country's folklore, and last but not least for the enjoyment of specialized and wide audiences alike.

1.
When my mother was rocking me,
She was singing of longing.

2.
She was singing of longing and I cried.
I've been caught by longing.

3.
Since my heart is longing,
I have no respite
Neither at noon nor at evening.

4.
How many longings? All are deep and bad.
All are in my arms.

5.
One dies being old
Not knowing what's the good of longing.

6.
But I know I've carried it
Since my mother sang.
