本曲在1973年4月得到美國排行榜連續4週冠軍, 也得到英國流行榜第一名,另外在澳洲也是得到第一名.
這首歌有個典故, 某對熱戀的男女, 男孩子因故入獄. 在他刑滿要出獄前寫了一封信給他的女朋友:
"我即將回來了,如果你願意接受曾經犯過錯的我,請你在路旁的老橡樹上繫上黃色的絲帶.
若我沒有看到黃絲帶,表示你不能原諒我, 那我就不下車了,你我美好的戀情我會永遠留在腦海裏."
後來男孩子坐車回到故里,快要到時嚇了一大跳, 原來他看到沿路上上百棵的老橡樹都已經繫上了黃絲帶.
原來是鄰居們知道了這件事情,為了挽回這對男女的感情,主動在路旁的老橡樹全部綁上了黃色絲帶.
